Birdland
co-artist Norman Dixon
found object assemblage and decoupage 2021
My sister and brother-in-law commissioned this piece to cover a thermostat in their home. The inspiration included their home on the Kentucky River where they are avid birdwatchers. They have enjoyed an oriole family that returns each year to nest in their yard. In addition, the piece sits adjacent to other art with a nature theme. And the piece needed to have lots of holes in it for adequate airflow so that the thermostat would register a true room temperature. Norman and I co-created this piece. He often helps me with any decoupage work that I incorporate into my pieces because he has a precise and steady hand at cutting paper and applying decoupage. In those instances the design is mine, and he is helping me execute it. In the case of Birdland, all of the decoupage elements were designed and executed by Norman, while I created the structure and added all of the 3-D elements. It was a true collaboration.
